In ancient China, a person's residence often served as a metonym for the person. The Crown Prince typically resided in the eastern part of the palace complex, and was thus known as the Eastern Palace; similarly, the Empress Dowager was often referred to by the name of her residence.

The Rear Palace collectively refers to the residences of the empress and consorts, reflecting the principle of 'court in front, living quarters behind.'
