Zang Ba, courtesy name Xuangao, was from Hua, Taishan. His father, Zang Jie, served as a county prison administrator. Adhering to the law, he refused the Grand Administrator's order to execute a man out of personal spite. The Grand Administrator, greatly enraged, ordered Zang Jie seized and brought to his headquarters, dispatching over a hundred men to escort him. Zang Ba, then eighteen, led several dozen retainers to intercept them directly in the hills west of Fei and rescue his father. None of the escorts dared resist. He then fled into hiding at Donghai together with his father, and from this became known for his bravery and spirit.

When the Yellow Turbans rose, Zang Ba followed Tao Qian in defeating them, and was appointed Commandant of Cavalry. Zang Ba then raised troops in Xu Province, and together with Sun Guan, Wu Dun, Yin Li, and others, assembled a following under his leadership. They garrisoned at Kaiyang. When Cao Cao (posthumously honoured as Taizu, the Grand Progenitor) campaigned against Lü Bu, Zang Ba and the others led troops to assist Lü Bu. When Lü Bu was captured, Zang Ba went into hiding. Cao Cao searched for Zang Ba and was delighted when he was eventually found. Cao Cao had Zang Ba persuade Wu Dun, Yin Li, Sun Guan, and Sun Guan's elder brother, Sun Kang, to surrender, and all came to Cao Cao. Cao Cao made Zang Ba Chancellor of Langya, and appointed Wu Dun to Licheng, Yin Li to Dongguan, Sun Guan to Beihai, and Sun Kang to Chengyang as Grand Administrators, entrusting to Zang ba the two provinces of Qing and Xu.

When Cao Cao was in Yan Province, he made Xu Xi and Mao Hui generals. When Yan Province fell into turmoil, both Xu Xi and Mao Hui turned traitor. After Yan Province was later pacified, they fled to seek refuge with Zang Ba. Cao Cao told Liu Bei to have Zang Ba send back the two men's heads. Zang Ba said to Liu Bei, "The reason I have attained my present standing is that I would never do such a thing. I have received from His Excellency the grace of being spared and preserved, and dare not defy his command. Yet a ruler destined for greatness can be reasoned with through righteousness. I hope you, General, will speak on my behalf." Liu Bei relayed Zang Ba's words to Cao Cao, who sighed and said to Zang Ba, "This is a deed of the ancients, and that you had the courage to uphold it is precisely what I had hoped to see." He then made both Xu Xi and Mao Hui Grand Administrators.

At the time, Cao Cao was locked in confrontation with Yuan Shao. As Zang Ba repeatedly launched attacks into Qing Province with elite troops, Cao Cao was free to devote his full attention to Yuan Shao without concern for the eastern front. When Cao Cao defeated Yuan Tan at Nanpi, Zang Ba and the others gathered to congratulate. Zang Ba then asked to send his younger clansmen and the families of his generals to Ye. Cao Cao said, "Your loyalty and filial devotion surely do not depend on this! In the past, Xiao He sent his younger kinsmen to serve at court, and Emperor Gaozu did not refuse them. Geng Chun burned down his home and brought along his own coffin to follow Emperor Guangwu, and Emperor Guangwu did not turn him away. How could I do otherwise!" As the eastern provinces were in turmoil, Zang Ba and the others upheld righteousness and pacified the region between Mount Tai and the Bohai Sea. None surpassed their achievements, and all were enfeoffed as Marquises. Zang Ba became a Capital Neighbourhood Marquis, and General Who Awes the Enemies.

Zang Ba also joined Yu Jin in campaigning against Chang Xi, and Xiahou Yuan in campaigning against Xu He and other Yellow Turban remnants. For his achievements he was promoted to Inspector of Xu Province. At the time, Wu Zhou of Pei State served as Prefect of Xiapi. Zang Ba respected and admired Wu Zhou, and personally visited his residence. When a Regional Affairs Aide acted unlawfully and abused his authority, Wu Zhou uncovered his crimes, arrested him, and brought him to justice. Zang Ba held Zhou in even higher regard as a result. Zang Ba then joined the campaign against Sun Quan, taking the lead in the assault. He later advanced into Chao Lake, attacked Juchao, and captured it.

When Zhang Liao campaigned against Chen Lan, Zang Ba was separately dispatched to Wan, to attack the Wu general Han Dang, so as to prevent Sun Quan from relieving Chen Lan. Han Dang sent troops to meet Zang Ba, and they fought at Fenglong. Han Dang again sent troops to intercept Zang Ba at Jiashi. Zang Ba fought and defeated them there, then withdrew to garrison at Shu. Sun Quan dispatched several tens of thousands of troops by boat to garrison at Shukou, detaching a force to relieve Chen Lan. Upon hearing that Zang Ba's army was at Shu, they retreated immediately. Zang Ba pursued through the night, and by dawn had marched over a hundred li, intercepting the enemy and striking them front and back. Pressed by the attacks, the enemy could not reach their boats, and many threw themselves into the water. Because of this the enemy could not relieve Chen Lan, and Zhang Liao went on to defeat him.

Zang Ba later joined the campaign against Sun Quan at Ruxukou, serving as vanguard together with Zhang Liao. On the march, the army encountered continuous rain. After the main force arrived, the waters rose, and the enemy's boats gradually advanced, causing unease among the men. Zhang Liao wished to withdraw, but Zang Ba stopped him, saying, "His Excellency understands perfectly what is at stake. Why would he abandon us?" The next day, orders to retreat did indeed arrive. Zhang Liao then told Cao Cao of the conversation. Cao Cao praised Zang Ba, and appointed him General Who Promotes Might, and Provisional Bearer of the Imperial Tally. Afterwards, when Sun Quan sought to surrender, Cao Cao withdrew, leaving Zang Ba together with Xiahou Dun and others to garrison at Juchao.

When Cao Pi (posthumously honoured as Emperor Wen, the Civil Emperor) succeeded as King of Wei, Zang Ba was promoted to General Who Garrisons the East, advanced in rank to Wu'an Township Marquis, the Township Marquis of Martial Pacification, and appointed as Commander of all military affairs in Qing Province. When Cao Pi ascended the imperial throne, Zang Ba was further enfeoffed as Marquis of Kaiyang, then reassigned as Marquis of Liangcheng. He joined Cao Xiu in campaigning against the Wu, defeating Lü Fan at Dongpu, and was summoned to the capital to become Bearer of the Golden Mace, ranked Specially Advanced. Whenever military affairs arose, the Emperor regularly sought his counsel.

The Weilüe / Brief History of Wei states: Zang Ba's other name was Nukou. Sun Guan's other name was Yingzi. Wu Dun's other name was Annu. Yin Li's other name was Lu'er. In the 24th year of Jian'an, Zang Ba sent a detached force stationed at Luoyang. When Cao Cao died, Zang Ba's own troops together with the Qing Province soldiery, believing the realm was about to fall into chaos, all beat their drums and departed without orders. When Cao Pi ascended the throne, he had Cao Xiu serve as Commander over Qing and Xu provinces. Zang Ba said to Cao Xiu, "The court has simply not been willing to entrust me! If I were given ten thousand infantry and cavalry, I could certainly sweep across the Yangtze frontier." Cao Xiu reported this to the Emperor. The Emperor had long been suspicious of Zang Ba for previously withdrawing his army without orders. Now, seeing that he remained as bold as ever, the emperor made an eastern tour and, when Zang Ba came to court, stripped him of his command.

When Cao Rui (posthumously honoured as Emperor Ming, the Illustrious Emperor) ascended the throne, Zang Ba's fief was increased by five hundred households, bringing his total to three thousand five hundred. When Zang Ba died, he was posthumously honoured as Marquis Wei, the Formidable Marquis. His son Zang Ai succeeded him. Zang Ai eventually rose in office to Inspector of Qing Province and Minister of the Lesser Treasury. When Zang Ai died, he was posthumously honoured as Marquis Gong, the Deferential Marquis. Zang Ai's son Zang Quan succeeded him. Across his career Zang Ba had rendered such service that three of his sons were enfeoffed as Marquises, and one was granted the rank of Marquis Within the Passes.

The Book of Wei states: Zang Ai, while young, was praised for his talent and judgement. He became Gentleman within the Yellow Gates, and served successively as Grand Administrator of various commanderies. Zang Ba had another son, Zang Shun, courtesy name Taibo, who under the Jin became Cavalier Regular Attendant. This is mentioned in the book Wudi Baiguanming, The Register of Officials under Emperor Wu. The author of this book is unknown. Each entry in the book carries a heading, and Zang Shun's states that he was "Exceptionally talented, clear-minded, and discerning in the affairs of the age."

Sun Guan likewise rose to become Inspector of Qing Province, and Provisional Bearer of the Imperial Tally. He followed Cao Cao in campaigning against Sun Quan, was wounded in battle, and died. His son Sun Yu succeeded him, and likewise rose to become Inspector of Qing Province.

The Book of Wei states: Sun Guan, courtesy name Zhongtai, was from Taishan. He rose up together with Zang Ba, campaigning against the Yellow Turbans, and was appointed Commandant of Cavalry. When Cao Cao defeated Lü Bu, he had Zang Ba summon Sun Guan and his brothers, and treated them all generously. Fighting alongside Zang Ba in every campaign, Sun Guan was always at the forefront of the assaults. In pacifying the various rebel bands of Qing and Xu provinces, his achievements ranked just below Zang Ba's, and he was enfeoffed as Lüdu Neighborhood Marquis. Sun Kang was likewise enfeoffed as a Marquis for his achievements. When he met with Cao Cao at Nanpi, Sun Guan sent his younger kin to reside at Ye, and was appointed Adjunct General, later promoted to Inspector of Qing Province. He followed the campaign against Sun Quan at Ruxukou, and was made Provisional Bearer of the Imperial Tally. During the campaign against Sun Quan, he was struck by a stray arrow that severely wounded his left foot. Yet he fought on relentlessly. Cao Cao commended him, saying, "General, your wound is grievous, yet your fighting spirit only grows fiercer. Should you not also cherish yourself for the sake of the state?" He was relocated to General Who Rallies Might. Later his wound worsened, and he died.
