Yue Jin, courtesy name Wenqian, was from Weiguo, Yangping. Though short in stature, he was bold and valiant, and entered the service of Cao Cao (posthumously honoured as the Grand Progenitor) as a clerk Under the Tent. Sent back to his home commandery to recruit troops, he raised more than a thousand men. On his return, he was appointed Acting Major of the army and Commandant Who Breaks Formations.

Yue Jin took part in the attacks on Lü Bu at Puyang, Zhang Chao at Yongqiu, and Qiao Rui at Ku. In each campaign, he led the assault and earned merit, and was enfeoffed as Guangchang Neighbourhood Marquis. He then took part in the campaign against Zhang Xiu at Anzhong and the siege of Lü Bu at Xiapi, where he defeated one of Lü Bu's generals. He also attacked Sui Gu at Shequan and Liu Bei at Pei, defeating them both, and was appointed Commandant Who Suppresses Bandits. Yue Jin later crossed the Yellow River and attacked Huojia, then returned and took part in the attack on Yuan Shao at Guandu. There he fought fiercely and slew Yuan Shao's general Chunyu Qiong. He then took part in the attack on Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang at Liyang, slew their general Yan Jing, and was appointed Acting General of the Mobile Forces. Separately, he also attacked and defeated the Yellow Turbans, pacifying Le'an Commandery . He then took part in the siege of Ye. Once Ye had fallen, Yue Jin joined the attack on Yuan Tan at Nanpi, where he was the first over the walls and entered through Yuan Tan's eastern gate. After Yuan Tan's defeat, Yue Jin went on to independently attack and capture Yongnu.

In the eleventh year of Jian'an, Cao Cao submitted a memorial to the Han emperor praising Yue Jin, Yu Jin, and Zhang Liao: "Their martial prowess is great and their strategies comprehensive. Loyal and trustworthy by nature, they steadfastly uphold honour and righteousness. In every battle and assault, they lead the troops, breaking strong forces and storming fortified positions. No stronghold can withstand them. They take up the drumsticks themselves, and their hands never tire. When sent on separate campaigns, they command their armies ably. They keep the troops in harmony, obey every order without transgression, and make sound decisions against the enemy without error. Their merits should be recognised and each of them conspicuously honoured." Yu Jin was accordingly appointed Mighty Tiger General; Yue Jin, General Who Breaks the Charge; and Zhang Liao, General Who Sweeps the Bandits.

Yue Jin then campaigned separately against Gao Gan, entering Shangdang by the northern route and circling round to his rear. Gao Gan and his men turned back to defend Huguan. Yue Jin fought them in successive engagements, and took many enemy heads. Gao Gan held out and Huguan could not be taken, but when Cao Cao came to campaign against him in person, it fell. When Cao Cao campaigned against Guan Cheng, he encamped at Chunyu and sent Yue Jin and Li Dian to attack Guan Cheng. Guan Cheng was defeated and fled to offshore islands, and the coast was pacified. As Jing Province had not yet submitted, Yue Jin was sent to garrison Yangdi. He later took part in the pacification of Jing Province and remained to garrison Xiangyang. Yue Jin then attacked Guan Yu, Su Fei, and the others, putting them all to flight. The Man and Yi peoples of the mountain valleys throughout Nan Commandery then came to Yue Jin and surrendered.

Yue Jin also attacked Du Pu, Liu Bei's County Chief of Linju, and Liang Da, Liu Bei's County Chief of Jingyang, decisively defeating both. He later took part in the campaign against Sun Quan and was appointed Provisional Bearer of the Imperial Tally. When Cao Cao returned, he left Yue Jin with Zhang Liao and Li Dian to garrison Hefei. Yue Jin's fief was increased by five hundred households, bringing the total to twelve hundred. Later, as Yue Jin had repeatedly earned merit, five hundred households were divided from his fief to enfeoff one of his sons as a Marquis, and he was also promoted to General of the Right.

In the twenty-third year of Jian'an, Yue Jin died and received the posthumous title Marquis Wei, the Formidable Marquis. His son Yue Chen succeeded him. Resolute and courageous, Yue Chen had his father's bearing and rose to become Inspector of Yang Province. When Zhuge Dan rebelled, he took Yue Chen by surprise and killed him. An imperial edict lamented the loss of Yue Chen, posthumously appointing him Commandant of the Guards and granting him the title Marquis Min, the Lamentable Marquis. His son Yue Zhao succeeded him.
